One of the cardinal rules of blogging is not to mix multiple themes in the same post. But then rules are there to be broken!
I received an invite to a Web seminar called ‘First Wave Boomers: Is Your Marketing Plan Ready?’ to be given by a Ms. Revesz who has produced some research entitled ‘38 Million Boomers to be 50+ by 2005.’ If your research budget is looking healthy it might be snip at $600.
Two observations. Firstly, as far as I know this is the first time this subject has been addressed in this way, which is great. Secondly, they wasted their promotion budget on the event by not checking the web link on their site was correct.
A word of warning. The next two links leave you stranded on the other site. Why designers construct sites this way I do not know.
Have a look at the site and then try and register for the event – it doesn’t work. It is silly mistake but has probably cost them 75% of their potential audience. First rule of e-marketing – make sure the links work.
If you are interested in the event you can log on from this site.
As they watch this event it is likely that many of the older marketers from the US will be chewing away on one of their favourite sweets (candies) from the 50s and 60s. Apparently Wal-Mart is creating a store-within-a-store called Kid Connection, which so far is in 160 stores and highlights products from the ‘good old days’. The sales of candy brands from the past (nostalgic candy to give it the correct name) seems to be doing amazingly well in the US accounting for $24.3 billion business, according to the National Confectioners Association.
Now the predicament for the marketer is to decide if this is a short term retro revival or part of bigger move to brands associated with the past. Maybe you will get the answers if you watch the seminar, although I doubt it?
