On average, around 69 million text messages are sent every day in the UK. The March figures are an increase of nearly 80 million on February's total.
According to the Mobile Data Association, older people have caught the texting bug from their kids and grandchildren.
Saga Radio, which is aimed at the over 50s, has been flooded with messages, following the launch of a texting facility. "The launch of text messaging at Saga Radio shows how versatile text messaging is, which makes it an attractive form of communication for everyone," said Mike Short, chairman of the MDA.
