Kiss a granny not a baby

The rule book for politicians is about to be re-written. The days when cooing away at a baby was a sure fire way of improving their voter appeal looks set to be replaced with being seen with an arm around a grandmother.

Age Concern and Loughborough University have researched the likely age of voters at the UK's next General Election.

If you ever wanted graphic evidence about the importance of the older vote then look at this brilliant Web site.

Just look at the estimated proportion of turnout in a General Election, comprised of voters aged 55+, in two UK constituencies.

Bournemouth West (48.4%) – a distinctly ‘old’ part of the UK and Poplar and Canning Town (26%) – a desert for the 50+.

If I was a marketing director of a political party I would spend a lot of time studying this data. Come to that it should be mandatory reading for all marketing directors. Dick Stroud
