Who cares who won the American election? They cannot do anything about population ageing

All eyes are on the US today as Obama gets the poison chalice of another period as President. We should be commiserating with the guy not congratulating him.

Anyway, lets talk about something that does matter. I am going to quote a few bits and pieces from the Seeking Alpha web site.

The US is a busy place. There is:

  • A birth every 8 seconds
  • A death every 13 seconds
  • An international migrant (net) every 44 seconds
  • Leading to a net gain of one person every 15 seconds

However, the U.S. birth rate had been plunging since the recession started in 2007, and it fell below population-sustaining levels in 2010. It's projected to fall to a 25-year low this year and not recover to pre-recession levels anytime soon

The situation is made worse as 38% of all unemployed workers in the U.S. are between 20 and 34 years old, according to the Labor Department. Anybody from the ad industry reading this? This is (was) your target group.

So much of America's future is going to be determined by the boring old science of demographics that neither the Republicans or Democrats can do anything about.

Best of luck President Obama. You could a lot worse than start your next term in office by doing some serious study of your country's changing demographics. Dick Stroud
