I recently researched the Web sites of companies in the cruise and adventure holiday industry to understand how they appeal to the 50+ consumer. The short answer is, they detested the cruise companies' sites and were ambivalent about those of the adventure holiday companies. Why? It was not some sophisticated problem of Web design but because they were horrible to use. It was a usability problem. More of this in the coming weeks.
The UK Government does publish some material worth reading, especially on the subject of usability. You might say, "pity they don’t apply it to their own web sites!!"
This is a good source of guidelines, white papers, checklists etc etc
Make sure you read this document, 'Usability issues for government websites'. An excellent guide.
Web usability and Web marketing are inextricably linked. It is a pity web designers have not understood that fact.
