Finding society’s centre of gravity

I recently saw Martin Hayward, the Chairman of the Henley Centre, present about the aging population and the issues it creates.

The core of his arguments was that ‘..the emotional centre of gravity of our society has remained rooted in youth despite the logical centre of gravity becoming much older..’ I admired his honesty in admitting that he is short on reasons to explain this anomaly.

He concluded ‘The Henley Centre believes that in future years, we should begin to see the over 50’s starting to assert their dominance in our culture once again. However, this will not be at the expense of youthful attitudes and aspirations, but they will demand a little more respect for experience and wisdom from a culture that remains rather intoxicated by youth and looks’. I sensed this was more in hope than reasoned expectation. Food for weekend thought.
