David Manion, Director, Age Concern London sums up this excellent report “Although this report contains a wealth of factual information about ageing and demographic change in London, it is actually about people – London’s older people”.
Even if you are only interested in the raw data about the population make-up of London it is worthwhile downloading this report.
I certainly didn’t know that London has over one million people of state pension age – more than in Scotland, Wales or five of the eight other English regions. Compared with the UK as a whole, London has a proportionately larger population of people aged 20–39, and a proportionately smaller population of people aged 65 and over. Whilst London’s population is projected to grow by 10% (between 2001 – 2016) the total number of people aged 60 and over is projected to remain about constant.
London is home to 45% of the total ethnic minority population of the UK. The population of the 65+ black and minority ethnic groups is projected to triple over the period 1991 to 2011.
In absolute numbers, London has nearly 2 million people aged 50+. That is a hell of a lot people. If you are a UK marketer I wonder if you have any idea of the regional age breakdown and how this forecast to change. This report makes a good start to find acquiring this data.
