Retire and hang-up your paintbrush and electric drill

A couple of days ago there was an announcement that the B&Q, one of the UK’s largest home improvements retailers, chief executive was being replaced. There have been dark mutterings about poor levels of sales.

I wonder if B&Q’s poor business performance might be linked with what seems to be the attitude of many 50 plus that they: “don’t want to paint, don’t want to cut the yard or fix things up”. It seems that in the US there is a trend for people reaching retirement to move, maybe downsizing, to properties that require little in the way of “do it yourself”. This attitude is not one confined to the US.

I think the old stereotype of men reaching retirement and rushing straight into a programme of house and garden maintenance is long since gone. Not good news for the B&Qs of this world. Dick Stroud www.20plus30.com
