Marketing’s age concern

Today’s issue of Marketing Week (sorry it is not online yet) has an article by Alicia Clegg headlined: Marketing is the domain of the young and vibrant, where the over-40s don’t fit in. But this must change, and not just because EU law will force the pace.

There is nothing terribly new in the article but I thought a couple of quotes worth blogging.

“As we get older, our values change. The majority of our appointees are under 30, because they tend to be more passionate and driven than older applicants.” So says Jon Sotnick, chairman of Hemmingway Executive Search & Selection. Nice to know the recruiting industry is in the hands of such fair minded people!!

A representative from OgilvyOne had a contribution with a touch more value: “bias towards youth is a creating a demographic absurdity, a situation where 45 -65 year olds represent the largest group in society , but only 12% of people employed in advertising.” There is not much you can add to that observation.
