Where have all of the grandparents gone?

This is the title of a one and half page article in today’s FT. Well really the article is about a third of a page and the rest are pictures. Subscription only.

Strange piece of writing. Lots of anecdotal stuff that says very little.

The only piece of research quoted is from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine's Centre for Population Studies. The article makes the statement that “at least a third of grandparents in Britian today are under 60 and therefore of working age”.

The only reference to research I can find on the web says “Today's grandparents are likely to be young (a third of those studied were under 60), to be holding down a full-time job and to value having time to themselves. Note the words “of those studied”.

I would be very careful in using these numbers.

The article did contain yet another new term “beanpole families” – where there are more grandparents and great grandparents than grandchildren. Dick Stroud: www.20plus30.com
