Whose generational experiences?

One of the techniques for understanding and directing 50+ consumer behaviour is by using their generational (cohort) experiences. Right or Wrong? Well I guess the answer has to be right, as long as they are truly shared by a large enough cohort. My question was triggered by Paul Kleyman's amusing article in which he raised the issue of how ethnic diversity, within a country, let alone the globally makes this very difficult to achieve. In the US and increasingly in Europe there is a significant ethnic mix. So, using 60’s and 70’s music to communicate with one group of 50+ may have no, even negative, effects on another.

Perhaps this is blindingly obvious but it is the first time I have given it any thought.
