Gap, is not making any comments about this news, but seems likely to be starting a new clothing chain targeted at women aged 35 to 50, hoping it will bring back people who once bought its jeans. I wonder how they hit upon the upper figure of 50 rather than 55 or 60? We know that as men and women age, they spend less money on clothes but why suggest an upper limit?
I loved this quote from the article (Business Week): “The key will be to avoid stealing sales from Gap's existing stores. Rather than more low-slung, snug-fitting pants, designers will have to serve up loose, flowing trousers -- perhaps even with elastic waistbands.” What makes me think the writer of this article is less than thirty?
The competitors appear to be Chico's (“with its fashionable-yet-forgiving styles”) and Talbots who between them have about 700 stores. Dick Stroud: www.20plus30.com
