What keeps being demonstrated by research that looks at the use of different Internet related services and age is a marked difference between people in their 20s and the rest of the population. In the example of Instant Messaging 62% of the age group use the service. For the rest of the population there is only an 8% difference on use in any age segment.
The take-up pattern of IM will be very similar to SMS (texting). Both are infectious products. As the report says: "It comes as no surprise that instant messaging is especially popular among younger Americans because many more of their peers subscribe to IM programs. Once one friend becomes available via instant messenger, usage among peers grows dramatically."
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the gap to close between the age penetration levels. I suspect, but can offer no proof, that the time is decreasing.Dick Stroud: www.20plus30.com
