“I am sure people will want to use 3G once they can see what it does”. This, or a variant of the sentence, would have been said somewhere in Europe’s Telecom companies after they had spent a fortune (many £10s of Billion) to secure the licences to operate the service. For the uninitiated, 3G is the Third Generation of networks for mobile phones that gives them a broadband speed data communications ability.
Well it is early days but it seems it is not easy getting punters, young and old, to do much more than use their phone to speak and to text. See the diagram below.
What is interesting is the analysis of how long people keep their handsets. This data is shown below.
It seems like the 12-18 year olds junk their handset every 15 months whilst the 55-64 year olds are willing to be seen carrying their out of date device for 28 months. Now I suspect some bright spark in the handset and network companies equated this difference with the need of younger people to always want to do the most advanced technical things with their phones. Doesn’t seem like it is working out that way. I would guess it is 85% what the handset looks like and 15% what it can do.
Since the network companies subsidise handsets I would have thought the longer people keep their phones the better? Interesting to note that between the ages 35-64 the difference in handset tenure is only 5 months. Dick Stroud www.20plus30.com
