Australian and US boomers

Today’s press contains a couple of interesting articles about the financial future of boomers in Australia and the US.

“Sandwich Generation's Retirement Balancing Act Boomers Concerned About Outliving Assets, Yet Too Busy to Save” is a rather longwinded headline about a report published by Guardian Life Insurance (US). Not surprising the conclusions (which are true) are all about the lack of financial preparation of the boom generation. A conclusion that is very convenient for the sponsor of the research.

The other article titled: Cash in on cashed-up baby boomers is about a report from ACNielsen about the way the boomer generation is splitting into two distinct groups in terms of spending patterns.

Not surprising the report has come up with yet a couple of more silly names for the different segments. Those who are working, have children and are building their retirement nest eggs have been dubbed "life jugglers". Retired baby boomers, who are focused on "me time", have been tagged "life surfers".

Neither articles have any amazing new revelations but if you are interested in these country markets they are worth a quick read. Dick Stroud
