50-plus shopping online for plants

About two-thirds of the people visiting the seed supplier Thompson and Morgan web site are 50-plus. This age group made up more than half of those visiting the Royal Horticultural Society site, according to data from Nielsen/NetRatings.

The owner of the Wyevale Garden Centres been building his stake in Dobbies Garden Centre and is understood to be keen to create a large online gardening business, capitalising on the spending power of the over-50s, who are increasingly shopping online.

This success of the online gardening business, being driven by the 50-plus, should not come as a surprise but it is good to see it confirmed with market data. Dick Stroud
