This is how it starts.
By their Wranglers you shall know them. And by their lines of coke after Sunday lunch. The baby boomers, a socio-economic group so strong they have their own version of Trivial Pursuit, have been reassessed and found wanting. A piece in Time magazine this month — “Balding, wrinkled and stoned” — assesses the national cost to America of boomers engaging in what it calls “a 40-year high”. According to data presented by a National Institute on Drug Abuse conference, the United States is bracing itself for a significant increase in the number of older adults suffering from “substance use problems”.As it starts it goes on.
I suppose we should have expected the “anti-boomer” backlash. The media’s coverage, during its “pro-boomer” phase, was single dimensional and mostly ill-informed. If Rosie’s article is anything like the standard we can expect in the future, then it is downhill from now on.
I will not insult your intelligence by commenting about the content of the article. What is so sad is that all of the commentary about the boomers (pro and anti) is written through the prism of the liberal elite who drone on about their narrow view and awareness of people born between 1946-1964.
Come on lighten up – who expected the media to inform and educate! Dick Stroud
