Remember The Graduate?
Remember the marvelous scene where Ben meets Mr McGuire who takes him asides and says: “I just wanna say one word to you. Just one word.”
Ben says: “Yes, sir”.
Mr McGuire: “Are you listening?”
Ben says: “ Yes, I am”.
Mr McGuire says: 'Plastics'.
If the film was made to today Mr McGuire would not be saying "plastics" but:”Blepharoplasty” (that's eye-lid tweaks to you and me). Why? Over the last year there has been a 50% increase in treatments to remove wrinkles and bags around the eyes.
The Harley Medical Group, one of the UK's largest cosmetic surgery businesses, claims that there are now four times as many 50-year-olds having surgery in their clinics as there were five years ago. Almost half these patients said they were undergoing treatment to stay young-looking at work.
The reason why older people were going under the knife for the sake of their careers is all about extending their chance of staying in the workforce and fighting off the two ‘R’ words - retirement and redundancy. This article in Management Today has contains some good stuff about the state of the UK employment market for the over-50s and the potential impact of the Age discrimination legislation. Dick Stroud
