Know how we can age better? The Big Lottery has put up £50 million to find out how.

I know I am something of a cynic. No that is wrong, I am very much a cynic, but I am at a bit of a loss to see why the Big Lottery has put £50 million to fund the Centre for Ageing Better.

One of its objectives is to 'Commissioning studies that harness and strengthen the evidence base around ageing'.

Gordon Bennett, how much more 'evidence' is required 'around ageing'? Let's hope they do some good.

To date, the 'evidence' is that anything that is funded and directed by the government does very little to move things forward. Let's hope I am wrong. Dick Stroud
