In today’s FT (subscription service) there is an article called “Grey Pride”. Ahhhh.
Once I got past the title and then opening sentence;”Skewiel Trynwalden is the creation of Foeke de Jong, a 51-year-old former student radical and gay liberation activist”, it was a fascinating article about a housing scheme for older people.
Rather than the traditional "care home", Trynwalden, which is the Netherlands, is a hundred apartments equipped with the latest technologies, and offering accommodation to those older people who preferred sheltered housing to living at home. All apartments are available for rent or purchase and all have the latest electronic gadgetry.
Where this seems to differ from the existing model of “sheltered housing” is that it bigger in scope; involves private, government and voluntary money and is all about letting older people have as much choice in how they want to live. The housing needs of the aging population are a huge challenge and massive business opportunity. The Dutch experiment is an interesting model. Another housing scheme that is particular to the UK and comes from a bygone era is the 'Almshouse'. These were charitable housing provided to enable older people, who could no longer work to earn enough to pay rent, to live in a protected community. They were often targeted at the poor of a locality and were often linked to the person's previous employment. Maybe, this old model might be resurrected? Dick Stroud www.20plus30.com
